Renewal Mill Launches New Upcycled Corn Flour, Debuts in Seven Sundays’ New Protein Cereal

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – June 8, 2023 – Renewal Mill, an early leader in the upcycled food movement, has just launched its third Upcycled Certified ingredient, Upcycled White Corn Flour, a byproduct of the cornmeal milling process. This ingredient joins the company’s existing portfolio of gluten-free, nutrient-dense, upcycled flours which currently includes Organic Okara Flour, made from the byproduct of soymilk production, and Oat Protein, made from the byproduct of oat milk production. Prior to Renewal Mill’s intervention, the corn flour byproduct was going to food waste destinations such as animal feed, ethanol production, and landfill.

Given its higher starch and carbohydrate content, Upcycled White Corn Flour pairs well with the high-fiber Organic Okara Flour and high-protein Oat Protein Flour to create unique, functional flour blends that are both packed with nutrition but also ideal for food manufacturing processes like extrusion.

For example, Seven Sundays, a Minnesota-based planet-forward breakfast company known for serving up cereals made with only real ingredients, used a blend of Oat Protein and Renewal Mill’s Upcycled White Corn Flour as the base of its new “Oat Protein Cereal.” The cereal, which comes in four flavors - Simply Honey, Super Fruity, Maple Cinnamon and Chocolate Sea Salt - contains 5 grams of upcycled plant-based protein per serving, no artificial or natural flavors, and no high-intensity sweeteners. The new line is also gluten free, Glyphosate-Residue free, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Upcycled Certified through the Upcycled Food Association. Starting this month, Oat Protein Cereal can be found in Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market stores nationwide.

Renewal Mill is selling the Upcycled White Corn Flour in 50 LB bulk bags, and the ingredient is currently being used in R&D by companies producing salty extruded snacks (chips and puffs), tortillas, crackers, breads, and more. R&D professionals can get samples of the new flour by contacting Renewal Mill via their website here.
